On Friday, November 5, 2021, Notre Dame Research hosted the Chief of Naval Research Rear Admiral Lorin C. Selby and representatives from the Navy research enterprise, including Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane and the Office of Naval Research (ONR), for its biannual Navy Research Forum.
Throughout the day-long event Navy visitors engaged with University of Notre Dame faculty and students on a range of issues supporting Navy and Marine Corps science and technology priorities, including discussions on STEM workforce development initiatives, a seminar on Navy research careers with undergraduate and graduate students, and visits to Notre Dame’s Turbomachinery Laboratory and White Field Research Laboratory, which includes the quiet Mach 6 hypersonic wind tunnel.
“The University of Notre Dame has a strong, storied relationship with the Navy and we were proud to expand on that by engaging with Navy researchers to further understand their innovation needs and showcasing our relevant research programs,” said Robert J. Bernhard, vice president for research and professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering. “Notre Dame looks forward to this continued relationship, especially as we work together to be a force for good in the world.”
Throughout the visit, Rear Admiral Selby and attendees met with Notre Dame faculty and researchers spanning the Colleges of Arts and Letters, Engineering, and Science to discuss research of interest or currently being funded by ONR and NSWC Crane. This includes work in the areas of artificial intelligence, hypersonics systems, cybersecurity, communications technologies, aerospace, and foreign object detection.
In addition, the Aero-Optics Group, Center for Research Computing, Hypersonics Systems Initiative, SpectrumX, and Wireless Institute all participated in the event and shared ongoing projects and insights into potential future collaborations.
